The Beginnings of a Blog — Self Actualising

Life moves fast, it’s moving faster than ever. Especially for me. Having an overactive mind is no curse as long as you have the right outlets. We all need outlets and creative ones are the most quintessential to the human experience. Maslow’s hierarchy of needs proclaims the abstract concept of ‘Self-Actualisation’ as the crowning achievement of a human life well lived. The vague term is so convenient because in practice self-actualisation can mean whatever you want it to mean. Perhaps a realisation of one’s agency, to simply make decisions that dictate who we are, is the easiest part of self-actualisation to grasp.

So I’m making a few big decisions in my life, one of them is to start a blog, not really out of a particular necessity of desired outcome, more to confront my indecisive history of writing in the past. I’ll be frank in admitting that this blog is clearly more for me than it is for you. I’m treating it as a bottle to mumble my musings into or a training ground for some greater work. Whatever materialises from this mish-mash of writings, I hope it won’t be too uncomfortable for my 30-year-old self to read 6 years from now.

From these first two paragraphs, you can already get a sense of my conversational if a bit rambling style. I want this to feel like a conversation, my favourite non-fiction writers always have that effect on me and it always causes a frenzy of page turning when I find a write who speaks to me. So let me speak to you. Maybe you’ll find my point of view relatable and this blog will help you to feel connected or maybe you’ll find my thought process to be eccentric and intriguing or perhaps amusing! This isn’t a serious space but I make no promises to avoid serious topics on this blog, those who know me are well aware that I’m not afraid to speak my mind.

I am loosely pledging some regularity in my posts, to myself of course. I aim to write 51 pieces of writing over the course of 6 months. No, this piece does not count. That averages out to one upload every 3.5 days or more practically, two per week. I haven’t set myself any limitations with regard to the length of each piece but I do promise never to post anything unless I am happy with it and am happy to yell from the rooftops of social media that “I Jack Sanctuary wrote this! I’m like so totally a literary man and shit.”

Let’s do this! Looking forward the big discussions to come! Let the conversation be open, kind and productive. Always.

Jack ❤
